Ildlannte is a bleak and boreal landscape shifting forms between despondent post-metal and a conflagration of ear sundering sludgy metal. Despite the harshness it's strangely harmonious, atmospheric, and somber. This would have handily made my top 10 of 2017 had I been graced by it sooner. Favorite track: Ildlaante.
Master of Muppets
This is some gloriously sludged out post metal, something to the effect of Ghost Brigade and October Tide blended into something somehow even more brutiful than both bands. Darkly melodic at times, mind-implodingly heavy at others, if crushing unhappiness makes you happy then this is your jam, yo.
Favorite track: Ildlaante.
Antarktis was co-founded by guitarists Björn Pettersson (In Mourning) and Tobias Netzell (In Mourning, ex-October Tide). Initially a few songs were written, yet laid on ice before they ever saw the light of day. As years passed, the idea of Antarktis was picked up once again, and what first started out as an after work side project, ventured off into a territory uncharted by the duo's mother band, In Mourning. Thanks to vocalist and bassist Daniel Jansson (Ikhon) and drummer Jonas Martinsson (Me The Tiger, Necrosavant), the line-up got completed in 2013, giving Antarktis new life and a personality of its own.
The band's debut album "Ildlaante" was recorded between September 2016 and February 2017 in three different studios in Sweden. Drums were tracked with Alexander Backlund and Sebastian Svalland at Nailvillage Studio. Guitars, bass, vocals and keyboards at Studio Libra, while additional vocals at Ikhon HQ. The record was mixed and mastered by Karl Daniel Lidén (Katatonia, Cult Of Luna, Draconian). Artwork was created by Emy Rojas of Arrache-toi Un Oeil.
punishing you with the most crushingly cosmic; blissful, violent, majestic; psychedelic visions of entropy and conquerment by the space-slug-slime slave overlords you never knew you wanted. an incredible experience bar none. ∞/10 ggallinwench
A corrosive mix of death, doom, psychedelia, and black metal, the Portland quartet’s debut full-length is a bona fide underground monolith that shapeshifts with each listen, all while maintaining its essential heaviness. Bandcamp Album of the Day Feb 1, 2019
